Let’s begin today’s post by talking about what is not fleet management. Fleet management is neither financial management nor operational management, when talking about fleet management, one thing that can never be forgotten is people, in fleet management everything comes back to human resources management, it is that simple!
Well, we can touch on other things later on because now we need to go over the most important part. Let’s see some tends, such as, working with megalopolis logistic like, night delivery, which fits in rules and laws, thinking always about client supply chain, ‘client infrastructure’, and his product dropped off, because your client is, after all, the “Landlord”. There are so many examples of tends, like Amazon that has been using drones for delivery, or China’s company that has been using people’s camouflage on buses or other camouflage forms of delivery that provides an escape and does not break the law. With that in mind, if we want to be a standout fleet manager we need to pay attention to tends, because at the end of the day, that makes a huge difference.
Now we can get into a major part: Security. Security needs a value-that-builds-value in your company, let me speculate a little on this. When you don’t have a security policy in your operation, some hypothetical harm may become real, however, through using telematics solutions to identify critical routes, correcting the use of your fleet equipment through building successful programs, you can assess the drivers, control fleet policies, and control off-way.
But let us not forget, solutions, software and tends aren’t anything without good management, for this reason, I recommend you to read my last post: Are you doing management or reading report? That’s an important factor, try to dedicate as much time as you can to get to know your employees and how they are carrying out their duties, and most importantly: without certain skills such as, good practices, sustainability practices and business laws, management is nothing.
Take also into consideration, good KPI’s may save your business, you should use calculations like fleet availability, TCO, and others that tend to make more with less. Do not forget about the vicious circle of inefficiency, it is crucial to know the critical success factors of your organization. Every factor that may cost impacts on operation needs to be deployed and measured.
Nowadays technology is everything. You must know about technology, solutions and anything that may help you with the automatic part of your operation. However, just having good software and solution will not turn you into a good manager, for this matter, learning maturity-cycle , which means go through a new set of skills step by step in order to master it, will not only make you an amazing manager but it will also build a culture around your company.
No one does good management without tools. It is important to buy end-to-end solution and this solution needs to be an easy-to-use tool. Software needs to fit-self in your ongoing business and help you understand where you may cut expenses. For example, if a solution does not help you with your base line management, think it over.
Currently it’s impossible not to think of mobile. If your company just has a mobile mindset, great! However, help your company if this is not happening, building a mobile strategy inside your organization or department and show that this is important, it is the beginning.
By the way, think of environmental sustainability as a world tend as well, take part in events, do network, find out solutions, think about innovation of process, all these things may help you.
Building a map of your process and value chain reduce process and create KPI’s that make sense in your business and lastly, analyses reports and put into action and create responsibilities for each one to carry out, turn this on circle, good circle for management.
Don’t forget, don’t just read reports, do management.
